How the Vision Reflects Alameda Residents' Input
The new Alameda Point Vision adds that mixed-use buildings should be required in Alameda Point, that safe routes to school should be designed, and that parking should be in structures that are behind or on top of buildings and streets rather than in large lots. The Visual Preference Survey results indicate that Alameda residents most support commercial development that incorporates ground floor retail with residential or offices above for Alameda Point. 57.2% said that this type of development should definitely be built at the Point: In the words of one resident who commented on this image, “this type of housing mix encourages walking to neighborhood stores. A win-win. Exercise- local neighborhood feel- increased security. What’s not to like?” A strong majority of the survey respondents agreed that families with children living at Alameda Point should have safe walking and biking access to their schools; 74.03% strongly agreed with this idea, and 75.98% strongly agreed that Alameda Point middle school students should be able to walk or bike to school safely. Parking is an important consideration for making Alameda Point neighborhoods more safely walkable. The two parking designs of the Visual Preference Survey which received the most “definitely not” votes when asked if they should be implemented at commercial developments at the Point were these very large open parking lots: This view was added to the vision which now says: “Parking should be a combination of structures tucked behind or on top of buildings and streets but not in large sea of parking lots that become pedestrian hazards and destroy walkability of neighborhoods.” | Related Links: |
